SOUTH BEND — South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg will not run for re-election in 2020, opening himself up to speculation for a possible presidential run.

Buttigieg made the announcement that he won’t be running Monday morning at South Bend City Hall.

Some political pundits view Buttigieg has a Democratic candidate for president, based on his military experience and status as a Rhodes Scholar.

He declined to discuss his future political plans on Monday.

“I won't be making any news about any other political activity on my end before the end of this year,” Buttigieg said. “I don't think it's a secret that we're looking at things, and we'll continue to do so going into the new year.”

He was previously scheduled to be one of the keynote speakers at the Progress Iowa on Thursday.
