LAFAYETTE — After a long battle with cancer, officer William John Meluch passed away on Dec. 25.

Meluch's passing marks the first time in decades that the Lafayette Police Department has lost an active member.

The Lafayette police officer was a member of the Lafayette Police Department since being hired in Jan. 2006.

Chief, Patrick Flannely, said Meluch will be missed in the department immensely.

"Bill was passionate about his desire to become a police officer, and had a strong desire to be a part of making a difference in the lives of those he came in contact with each and every day," Flannely said.

Lafayette Chief said that Meluch was a dedicated police officer and a good friend.

"Someone who always found the time to listen and to make those around him laugh. Bill's humility, courage, and selfless dedication to help others is an example for us all to follow."

The LPF extends their sympathies to Meluch's family.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
