Circle City Kombucha is making the fermented tea right here in Indianapolis

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- A business on Indianapolis' east side is making a name for itself brewing kombucha.

A drink that's been around for thousands of years, Kombucha originated in Northeast China around 220 B.C.

"Kombucha is a fermented tea. Basically, you have a culture, a live active culture with yeast and bacteria in it, and you pitch sugar and tea along with the culture. And use different fruits, juices, or herbs, vegetables to create the flavors."

Kombucha is popular in many parts of the country, but it's still making its name in the Midwest.

"In Indiana, there wasn't really anyone doing it, so it made sense to do it here," Skylar Williams, Owner and Brewer Circle City Kombucha, said.

Skylar Williams and Matt Whiteside are the guys behind Circle City Kombucha.

"Our goal is to bring a healthy alternative to Indiana,  and that is how we have been focused," Matt Whiteside, Owner and Brewer, Circle City Kombucha, said.

The reason kombucha flies off the shelves in stores is for its reported health benefits.

The drink is filled with probiotics to help your stomach and digestive system. It also contains enzymes and vitamin B.

"The best part, it is fizzy, refreshing, no added sugars, so a healthy alternative to soda."

What is even sweeter is that Circle City Kombucha is all local, keeping their business on Indy's developing east side and employing Hoosiers.

"The last couple of years have really shown us that people in the midwest like healthy options. If its made local, tastes good and has fresh, healthy ingredients, it is going to be a success."

Circle City Kombucha flavors include pomegranate, ginger-lemon, peach blossom and in the spring, strawberry rhubarb and concord.
