FISHERS — World Menopause Day is Friday, Oct. 18, and a Fishers pajama company is celebrating with education, philanthropy, and beer.

While many women celebrate the end of their monthly cycle during menopause, others are probably celebrating the end of spending hundreds of dollars a year on tampons and pads.

Feminine hygiene products are luxury items for many low-income women. This is something CoolRevolution PJs — who sells pajamas specifically for women who suffer from night sweats — in Fishers knows and understands.

CoolRevolution will be answering questions about menopause and collecting tampons at Books & Brews in Fishers from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m on Friday. In honor of the event, Books & Brews will donate $1 from every beer or wine purchased to 'Family Promise.' Family Promise is a nonprofit that helps homeless and low-income families achieve independence.

Donations of tampons and maxi pads can be dropped off at Books & Brews any time from 11 a.m. to Midnight on Friday.

"Menopause continues to be a misunderstood and often a taboo subject," Janet Carpenter, Indiana University School of Nursing researcher, said. "The exhibit helps start conversations and also provides insights into what happens as women go through changes in mid-life."

Carpenter infuses art to help explain hot flashes, which affect more than 75 percent of women during perimenopause and menopause.

Carpenter will show pieces from her exhibit during the event.

Laura Musall and Mindy Ford founded CoolRevolution PJs earlier this year as a response to the lack of products for women who experience night sweats. In doing so, they have heard from hundreds of women who like them, are frustrated with how little is known and talked about menopause and perimenopause.

"We wanted to do something to bring the topic to the forefront and help women get the information they need to navigate changes all of us go through in mid-life," Musall said. "We also wanted to give back to those in need, and we can't think of a better way than to help women who are period poor and can't afford basic feminine hygiene products."

The total cost of women's periods over the course of a lifetime is over $18,000.

Books & Brews will also be introducing a special beer titled 'Hop Flash' on Friday.
