INDIANAPOLIS —Not only was Channel 6 the first television station in Indiana, but it was also the first in Indiana to use portable live remote equipment beginning in 1975.
In 1980, WRTV anchor Clyde Lee took viewers to the top of the Indiana National Bank Tower, now known as Regions Tower, to show them how Channel 6 delivered live pictures to their homes.
WRTV called this technology Insta-Cam.
The Insta-Cam operation had many parts. There was the Insta-Cam truck which had the equipment necessary to make just about any location in Central Indiana a live studio. A crew would establish a microwave link between the Insta-Cam truck and a tower on top of the Regions Tower. If a story was far enough away, WRTV crews could use SkyCam 6 to relay the signal to the tower.
All of this technology helped WRTV deliver live pictures via Insta-Cam reports to thousands of Hoosier households every day.
