Flu deaths increase 37 percent in Indiana in 1 week; 79 total statewide

INDIANAPOLIS -- Flu deaths increased 37 percent over one week in Indiana, bringing the total for the season to 79 according to new numbers from the Indiana State Department of Health.

For the week ending Jan. 6, the state health department reported 50 flu deaths for the season and 79 deaths for the week ending Jan. 12.

The first flu-related death in Indiana for the 2017-18 season was reported on December 8, more than a month later than the first death of 2016. The first death of the season was a juvenile, according to the Indiana State Department of Health.

72 of the 79 deaths from this flu season were in people ages between the ages of 50 and 65+

Three counties in central Indiana have reported five or more flu deaths:

Flu activity is widespread in Indiana which has prompted several central Indiana hospitals to start restricting visitors.
