INDIANAPOLIS — Delta will begin a new daily, nonstop flight from Indianapolis to Memphis beginning Oct. 1, according to an announcement from the Indianapolis Airport Authority.

It's a route that hasn't been served since 2015.

"We've been working for a while on a route to Memphis, and Delta had a close eye on the market trends and made it happen," Mario Rodriguez, executive director of the Indianapolis Airport Authority, said.

Memphis is a popular tourist city, rich with history, and is currently home to FedEx's largest hub, which is an added benefit to the FedEx employees located in Indianapolis, Rodriguez said.

Air travel has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and airlines are making route adjustments based on current market demand, the IAA said. Indianapolis has seen some rebound with new flights taking off or set to launch later this year, including a new flight to St. Louis on Southwest, Ft. Lauderdale on Spirit in November, and Ft. Myers on United in December.

"The reality of COVID has brought a shift in market demand, and we could see more shift in this direction as the pandemic runs its course," Rodriguez said. "We applaud airlines like Delta who are at the forefront of those shifts and pivoting to meet them."

The IAA said the new flight to Memphis is currently available for the traveling period Oct. 1 through Dec. 18, 2020.
