VENTURA COUNTY, Cal. -- Actor and filmmaker Stephen Furst, best known for playing Flounder in "Animal House," died Friday at his home in Ventura County, California.

Stephen's sons, Nathan and Griffith, posted to their father's Facebook page on Saturday, saying their father died of complications from diabetes.

The boys called their father a "brilliant and prolific actor and filmmaker."

"To truly honor him, do not cry for the loss of Stephen Furst. But rather, enjoy memories of all the times he made you snicker, laugh, or even snort to your own embarrassment. He intensely believed that laughter is the best therapy, and he would want us to practice that now," the boys wrote.

Along with playing Kent 'Flounder' Dorfman in Animal House, Stephen also had starring roles on "Babylon 5" and "St. Elsewhere," as well as voice roles in Buzz Lightyear of Star Command and The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea.
