INDIANAPOLIS — The need for food is great. That was obvious Friday as nearly 900 families drove up to a massive food distribution by Gleaners Food Bank held at Ivy Tech Community College on the Indianapolis north side.

With members of the Indiana National Guard helping, each family received a 50 pound box of fresh food packed by McFarling Foods for the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program.

The boxes contained fresh fruits and veggies, cheese, milk, and a variety of cooked meat including chicken nuggets, pulled pork barbecue, and bacon.

Gleaners Food Bank has seen a significant increase in the need for food among people who have lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic.

Another Gleaners distribution takes place this Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at John Marshall High School, 10101 East 38th Street,
