The Beech Grove Police Department has implemented a new sick leave policy after Call 6 Investigates uncovered that officers were abusing the policy.

According to a copy of the new policy obtained by Call 6 Investigates, changes were made by the police department to better control when and how officers use sick time and the guidelines that surround it.

Also, a new line was also added to the policy that bans officers from working outside employment while on sick leave.

The Beech Grove City Council was also supposed to bring up the issue Monday night, but that didn't happen.

"I'm a little disappointed," said City Attorney Craig Wiley. "I thought there would be something on the city's agenda."

Even though the full council didn't bring up the issue, it was discussed by the Public Works Committee.

"I think the taxpayers were paying for something that they were not getting the service for, and that frustrates me as a taxpayer on top of it," said Beech Grove Clerk-Treasurer Dan McMillan.

The discussion, on hold for now, was scheduled to be brought back up in two weeks at the next Public Works Committee meeting.
