HOWARD COUNTY, Ind. – Indiana State Police is investigating why the man suspected of fatally shooting a Howard County Sheriff’s Deputy had a police badge in his possession.

Call 6 Investigates has confirmed police found a Kokomo Police badge inside the trailer of Evan Dorsey after Deputy Carl Koontz was killed.

The Kokomo SWAT team responded to help secure the scene after Koontz was on the way to the hospital, according to ISP Sgt. John Perrine.

“It’s highly unlikely that the badge was left or dropped by a member of the Kokomo SWAT team,” Perrine said.

“We believe it was there before we got there. We are trying to figure out how Dorsey got his hands on it.”

Call 6 Investigates reached out to the Kokomo Police Department for comment.

“This is an ongoing investigation, you will need to contact the Indiana State Police,” Major Brian Seldon, Kokomo Police Department, said in an email to RTV6.

Dorsey’s rap sheet spans at least six counties in Central Indiana, mostly for drug offenses.
