MUNCIE, Ind. -- Three Muncie schools closed due to budget constraints will be demolished, Call 6 Investigates has learned.
Storer, Mitchell and Sutton elementary schools were closed permanently amid budget concerns in the district.
The schools will be sold and demolished for salvage, and the land will be used by the city of Muncie for possible housing development.
The Muncie Redevelopment Commission, an economic development arm of the city, discussed the schools’ fate at a recent meeting, and the school board is expected to discuss the demolition at their regularly scheduled Dec. 12 meeting.
A Richmond company will pay Muncie Community Schools $125,000 for the school properties, and the contractor will demolish them.
The company, Mint Management, can also salvage anything of value, including bathroom fixtures and floors, according to Donati.
Then, Mint Management will give the three school properties to the Muncie Redevelopment Commission, who will donate $658,000 to Muncie Community Schools, which is the value of the schools and surrounding land.
The figure also includes land near the former Wilson Middle School.
