About 18,000 Hoosiers file first-time unemployment claims

INDIANAPOLIS – More than nine months into the pandemic, more than 18,000 Hoosiers filed first-time unemployment claims in the week ending Jan. 9.

The Department of Labor reported 18,812 new unemployment claims by Hoosiers.

The number is an increase from the past few weeks. The previous week's total has been adjusted to 14,796. The number of claims in Indiana remained above 20,000 for 17 straight weeks from early March to mid-July.

In the 40 weeks since the COVID-19 pandemic began, more than 1.2 million Hoosiers have filed for unemployment.
