COVID-19 death toll in Indiana state prisons increases to 43

INDIANAPOLIS — The total number of inmate and staff deaths at state prisons in Indiana has increased to 43, according to the Indiana Department of Correction.

Three state prison staff members and 40 offenders statewide have died with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19.

According to the IDOC numbers, there have been tests administered to 4,623 staff members with 1,174 positive cases. There have been 12,021 tests administered to inmates with 2,869 positive cases. Currently, 783 inmates are in quarantine, while 577 are in isolation with COVID-19.

To date, nine inmates have died at New Castle, eight at Plainfield, six at Westville, five at Miami, four at Pendleton, three at Putnamville, two at Indiana State and one each at Branchville, Correctional Industrial and Wabash Valley.

The three staff member fatalities included one each at Indiana Women's, Putnamville and Wabash Valley.

New Castle has the most confirmed cases of COVID-19 among inmates with 329, along with 82 staff members.
