INDIANAPOLIS — Nearly 20,500 Hoosiers filed first-time unemployment claims in the week ending on Nov. 21.
A total of 20,452 people filed claims last week, an increase of 5,032 from the previous week's adjusted total of 15,422, according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Labor.
Not since the week ending July 25 had more than 20,000 people in Indiana filed for first-time unemployment benefits.
The number of claims in Indiana remained above 20,000 for 17 straight weeks from early-March through mid-July before eventually falling into the 10,000 range where it remained until early October.
In the 34 weeks since the COVID-19 pandemic began, more than a million Hoosiers have filed for unemployment.
