DELAWARE COUNTY — More than 200 Delaware Community Schools students have been sent home to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Superintendent Reece Mann confirmed 228 students at schools across the district, on the northeast side of Muncie, are currently in quarantine.

Additionally, Mann announced that Delta Middle School and Delta High School will move to virtual learning starting Wednesday through August 24. The district's elementary students will continue to attend traditional school.

"Moving forward, we will need the help of all DelCom parents in keeping your children at home if they have COVID-19 related symptoms," said Mann in a message to families. "If your child is currently being quarantined, he/she may not attend sporting events until after the date we provided you in an earlier message."

The district announced Friday that a football player at Delta High School tested positive for the coronavirus. Mann said Tuesday the Delta student remains the only confirmed positive test in the district.

Students in the district had the option to enroll in a virtual learning option for the year, according to the district's back to school plan. In-person classes began Thursday.

The Delaware Community Schools Corporation has approximately 2,600 students at five schools.
