FISHERS — Some parents in Fishers want their children back in the classroom.

On Wednesday night, some Hamilton Southeastern parents took to the streets to show their support for going back to school in-person.

HSE is the only school in the county, not allowing some sort of in-person learning from grades 5th through 12th.

Last Friday, the district updated its back to school plan. So now pre-k to 4th grade students will move to a hybrid model, starting September 8. Grades 5th through 12th graders will remain 100% virtual.

Wednesday night's school board meeting only allowed 15 people inside, so WRTV spoke to people outside the meeting, and they explained why they disagree with the plan.

"They think it's the safest thing for an isolated group. This disease woefully afflicts the elderly and the debilitated. (For) our children, this is not the safest thing," one parent said.

"My health is my problem. And I need to be aware, and we both ask our family if you are sick or you've been with someone who has been sick all we ask is to let us know all take it from there. I'll wear my mask, which I do most of the time, and I'll get my hands cleaned up, past that this is a situation we each need to take care of ourselves," a grandparent at the protest said.

Because of the limited seating, the board meeting was streamed online.

Some parents and educators spoke during the public comments, and some parents do support the school's decision. One parent taking to the podium saying her kids do want to go back to school, but it's OK that they aren't, if that's what is safe.

The school board didn't make any decisions last night but did say they will evaluate this situation weekly.
