INDIANAPOLIS — More than 500 Wayne Township teachers and staff members took to the streets in the west side Indianapolis school district Thursday to say goodbye to their students.
It was something they didn't get to do in March when schools shut down suddenly over COVID-19 concerns.
The Wayne Township district staged a teacher and staff parade. "We all have felt the loss of not being able to say goodbye to our students at the end of the school year," said Superintendent Dr. Jeff Butts. "Similarly, we know many students want to say goodbye to their teachers and school staff."
The caravan covered over 100 bus routes through the west side neighborhoods. Vehicles were decorated with signs, balloons, streamers and more.
Many families came out in front of their houses and apartments, and some had their own signs.
The caravan was supposed to take place Wednesday, but storms rained it out.
