YORKTOWN — Starting next week, students at Yorktown High School will attend classes based on what letter their last name begins with.

It's a response to COVID-19. About 10% of Yorktown students had to quarantine when three students tested positive for the virus.

The school, west of Muncie in Delaware County, plans to cut the number students in the high school building at any one time by 50%.

Beginning Monday, students with last names that begin A-K will attend school in person two consecutive days. They will then be at home for virtual learning for two days, while students with last names that begin L-Z will be in the classroom. The process will be repeated until at least September 2.

The hope is that by reducing the number of young people in the building, there will be less chance of a COVID-19 outbreak.
