EVANSVILLE — Mildred Grassman turned 100-years-old Monday. That, in itself, is something to celebrate. But what she chose to do on her birthday is just as special.

Mildred received her second COVID-19 vaccination Monday at the Ascension St. Vincent Clinic in Evansville.

When she was inoculated the first time a few weeks ago, Mildred scheduled the second dose on her birthday. The pharmacists and volunteers in the clinic teamed up to plan a special surprise birthday celebration for Grassman when she came in Monday.

Since she can't celebrate her milestone with her best friends and family, who haven't all been vaccinated yet, the pharmacists were tickled to make the day special for Mildred.

Mildred was born in 1921. What was going on that year? Warren G. Harding became president, commercial radio began to catch on, and so did fast food restaurants. White Castle opened its first location in Wichita, Kansas.
