INDIANAPOLIS — The American Red Cross says the need for blood donations in Central Indiana will increase as we move into flu season.

The organization is urging healthy people of all blood types to to make a donation so the supply will not run short as the country braces for the flu season in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Red Cross is encouraging flu shots, because blood can only be given by those who are feeling well. A severe flu season could create additional blood supply challenges.

There is no waiting period to give blood or platelets after receiving a flu shot as long as the donor is symptom-free and fever-free.

An appointment to make a donation can be done by downloading the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

In thanks for donating, the Red Cross will send those who come to give between October 15 and November 11 a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email, courtesy of Suburban Propane. Plus, those who come to give in October are automatically entered for a chance to win a $1,000 Amazon.com Gift Card.
