INDIANAPOLIS — INDIANAPOLIS — IndyGo is getting a big chunk of federal grant money, part of the government's COVID-19 relief act known as "CARES".
The Indianapolis public transit agency will receive $44.2 million—money to be used for salaries, administrative leave, paratransit service, fuel, personal protective equipment (PPE), cleaning services and supplies, and new safety equipment and protective barriers.
The $44 million is IndyGo's share of a $25 billion federal grant program for public transit, which has been hit hard by the pandemic.
“We know many of our nation’s public transportation systems are facing extraordinary challenges and these funds will go a long way to assisting our transit industry partners in battling COVID-19,” said Federal Transit Administration Acting Administrator K. Jane Williams. “These federal funds will support operating assistance to transit agencies of all sizes providing essential travel and supporting transit workers across the country who are unable to work because of the public health emergency.”
