INDIANAPOLIS — The city has offered a two-month rent deferral to all tenants in the Indianapolis City Market, Mayor Joe Hogsett announced on Friday.
All merchants in the main hall of the City Market can defer up to two months of rent and pay the money back over the remainder of their lease. The tenants will not accrue interest on the deferral, either.
City Market merchants, much like the rest of the country, are experiencing a significant loss in revenue.
More than two dozen small businesses are housed in the main hall of the City Market. The city hopes this announcement lightens the burden for Indy's local entrepreneurs.
"In this time of uncertainty, we must all be willing to do our part to come together as one city and lift up those in need," Mayor Hogsett said. "That's why I'm proud that the City of Indianapolis – as landlord to these small businesses – is in a position to offer this flexibility in support of their continued success. It is my hope that we will continue to see other landlords, businesses, and institutions do what they can to ensure our community's best days are yet to come."
