INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill said people struggling during the coronavirus pandemic and economic downturn should check to see if they are the owners of unclaimed funds.
Hill said in a news release that thousands of Hoosiers have lost their jobs or been forced to work remotely during the outbreak, and that it is an appropriate time to check with the Unclaimed Property Division of the Office of the Attorney General.
“Any Hoosier who is struggling financially due to this public health emergency should search Indiana Unclaimed to see if there are unclaimed funds waiting for them,” Hill said. “While there isn’t property available to everyone, a quick search on our website could potentially improve a difficult situation. It’s worth a look.”
Unclaimed property can include stock dividends, commissions, insurance proceeds, underlying shares, among other types of finances.
The attorney general's office said the Unclaimed Property Division returns more than $1 million per week, and it returned more than $188 million from 2017-2019.
Indiana residents should go to the Unclaimed Property Division's website and click "search unclaimed properties." Once a person has claimed their property, they can track the status of their claim.
There might be a delay in services due to new procedures the division has taken to protect employees during the coronavirus outbreak, the release said.
