INDIANAPOLIS – More than 26,000 Hoosiers filed first-time claims for unemployment last week, still more than 10 times the pre-pandemic level.

The numbers are for the week that ended on May 23.

The week’s number was a decrease from the previous week’s 29,436. That week’s number was revised downward by 875.

In the 10 weeks since the COVID-19 pandemic started, 704,954 Hoosiers have filed for unemployment. That is about 22% of the state’s labor force, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.
