INDIANAPOLIS – The city of Indianapolis has distributed nearly 700,000 free face masks since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor Joe Hogsett said Wednesday.
The program started in May, when the city said it would provide free masks for people who can’t afford one or get one for themselves. The mask program is being funded through the federal CARES Act. About $3 million has been appropriated for it.
The masks have been distributed to both residents and organizations such as Gleaners Food Bank.
Wearing a face mask in public is required in Indiana when inside a public area, or outdoors when social distancing isn’t possible.
