BLOOMINGTON — Indiana University announced a plan Wednesday to resume its athletic calendar in the fall.
According to a 17-page guide, athletes will be subject to a series of screening procedures before they can begin voluntary practices. The plans also outlines post-workout requirements that are designed to allow for social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We cannot totally eliminate the risk,” IU Athletic Director Fred Glass said. “At least until there is a vaccine, there will be risk. What we can do is have the best doctors give us the best protocols and make sure they are strictly followed. That’s what we’ve done and what we are going to do.”
Teams will return to campus on a staggered schedule beginning with football on June 15. Men's and women's basketball will follow June 18. IU's other fall sports programs are scheduled to return in July and August with women's soccer on July 6, volleyball on July 8, men's soccer on July 13, field hockey on July 15 and cross country on Aug. 18.
IU previously announced changes to its 2020-21 academic calendar, which will run from Aug. 24 to May 9 as originally planned, but will now be in three parts with in-person and online classes through Thanksgiving break, an online-only period from Nov. 30-Feb. 8, followed by a return to in-person classes through the end of spring semester.
