More than 80 Indy first responders test positive for COVID-19, most returned to work already

INDIANAPOLIS — More than 80 Indianapolis first responders have tested positive for COVID-19 over the past few months, though more than 90% have recovered and returned to work.

According to the Marion County Emergency Operations Center, the following agencies have reported COVID-19 infections:

IMPD: 42 tested positive, 36 cleared and returned to work

IFD 32 tested positive, 31 cleared and returned to work

IEMS: 8 tested positive, 8 cleared and returned to work

There are more than 3,000 police officers, firefighters, EMTs and paramedics working in Indianapolis.

First responders are tested for free by Eli Lilly & Co. following an exposure protocol developed by IEMS, which is run through the EOC.
