CASS COUNTY — As many as 44 inmates at the Cass County jail have tested positive for COVID-19, which is 23% of the jail population.

None of the inmates have been hospitalized, Cass County Sheriff Edward Schroder said.

Those who have tested positive are experiencing mild symptoms and are being treated by the contracted provider, he said.

The staff has locked down the jail, limited inmate movements, issued facemasks and increased sanitation efforts.

“During this serious situation and lockdown, I want to let families of the inmates know the appropriate care for their loved ones is our top priority,” Schroder said.

Six deputies and clerical employees have tested positive since the start of the pandemic.
