Number of COVID-19 deaths in Indiana state prisons increases to 47

INDIANAPOLIS — Two more inmates at Indiana Department of Corrections facilities have died with COVID-19, increasing the state's death toll at state prisons to 47.

Three state prison staff members and 44 offenders statewide have died with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19. The most recent inmate deaths occurred at New Castle Correctional Facility and Correctional Industrial Facility in Pendleton.

According to the IDOC numbers, there have been tests administered to 5,054 staff members with 1,324 positive cases. There have been 13,074 tests administered to inmates with 2,957 positive cases. Currently, 870 inmates are in quarantine, while 441 are in isolation with COVID-19.

To date, 10 inmates have died at New Castle, eight at Plainfield, seven at Miami, six at Westville, four at Pendleton, three at Putnamville, two each at Correctional Industrial and Indiana State and one each at Branchville and Wabash Valley.

The three staff member fatalities included one each at Indiana Women's, Putnamville and Wabash Valley.

New Castle has the most confirmed cases of COVID-19 among inmates with 337, along with 86 staff members.
