INDIANAPOLIS – The number of Hoosiers filing for unemployment is back on the rise.
For months, the number of first-time claims had decreased since the peak of about 140,000 people in mid-March. But last week, the state saw an increase of first-time claims of about 1,000, from 22,931 to 24,017.
Indiana had another jump in claims, as 31,885 Hoosiers filed first-time claims for unemployment, which is about 7,800 more than the previous week.
In the 14 weeks since the COVID-19 pandemic began, about 806,000 Hoosiers have filed for unemployment.
Last week’s 31,885 is much less than the peak of 140,000 of mid-March, but at this time a year ago, there were only 1,960 unemployment claims made.
