TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of its own.
John Schoffstall, 41, a veteran firefighter at the department, died early Sunday morning from COVID-19.
Terre Haute Fire Department Chief Jeff Fisher said Schoffstall was one month short of his 12th anniversary with the department where he worked out of Station 5 on its support and rescue truck.
Fisher described Schoffstall as an excellent firefighter and paramedic and said he will be missed.
"John was respected by his brother and sister firefighters, as well as the community," Fisher said. "John was a friend and his absence will be truly felt by all."
Schoffstall is survived by his wife and two children.
Fire departments, police departments and politicians from around the state expressed their condolences on social media for Schoffstall's family and fellow firefighters.
