INDIANAPOLIS, IN (WRTV) — INDIANAPOLIS — By January 4th, more than 90,000 Hoosiers are estimated to have received the COVID-19 vaccination, but state officials say there is still a long way to go.

Across Indiana, there are more than 400,000 healthcare providers, and officials are asking those waiting for a vaccine to be patient. Vaccinations at long-term healthcare facilities for both residents and staff are expected to begin on Monday.

Here’s a breakdown of the vaccine rollout across Indiana so far:

  • By the end of Tuesday, 40,000 Hoosiers will be vaccinated.
  • There are currently 50,000 people scheduled to get the vaccine statewide through January 4th.

“We witnessed tears of joy, excitement and above all — relief. Relief that we’re one step closer to being on the other side of this pandemic,” Indiana Health Department’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Lindsay Weaver said.

The first Moderna vaccines were delivered Monday to Hammond, Indiana. Health officials expect the allocation request to be granted Wednesday or Thursday, but warn supplies for both vaccines are limited.

Officials also urge even those who are vaccinated to continue wearing masks. “Yes, they are anxious to get more vaccine in order to vaccinate more people as quickly as they can,” Dr. Weaver said.

During the Tuesday press briefing, Governor Eric Holcomb and other state leaders shared a recent survey detailing “nearly 57% of Hoosiers” plan on getting vaccinated. Efforts to launch a vaccine campaign are underway.

By the end of the year, the state plans to launch a vaccination dashboard with the hope of updating it weekly.
