KOKOMO, Ind. -- A Kokomo woman faces attempted murder charges for allegedly shooting her husband multiple times.

Kokomo police were called to the Regency Trailer Park around 2 a.m. Thursday after the Howard County Emergency Dispatch Center received calls from people hearing gunfire and a woman screaming.

One of the callers, Erica Fortson, told police she was awakened by the sound of her father yelling for help.

She walked outside to see her father, 51-year-old Eric Fortson, slumped over on the hood of his vehicle.

Fortson told his daughter to call 911 because he had reportedly been shot several times by her mother, 53-year-old Laura Fortson.

As Erica Fortson spoke with dispatchers, her mother reportedly reappeared and pulled out a gun – shooting her husband again before fleeing the scene.

Laura Fortson led responding officers on a high-speed chase through Howard County and into northern Miami County before she was finally stopped and taken into custody.

She was booked into the Howard County Jail on preliminary charges of attempted murder, resisting law enforcement and reckless driving.
