Home is where we’re supposed to feel the safest, but even being there doesn’t make you immune to crime.
Experts say there are simple things you can do to keep burglars away.
The doorbell camera sells for between $200 and $300. It allows you to see anyone who’s at your front door, whether you’re home or away. Some even allow you to talk to them.
“You can go to dinner with your wife. Somebody comes to your door and rings it, and you’re sitting out. Your phone alerts you. You can have a conversation with them,” said Theo Garber, owner of Protecht Security.
Another item that’s gained attention recently are door jamb reinforcement devices. They prevent your door from being kicked in and can be bought for as little as $79.
Experts also recommend cameras and motion detectors. But if you can’t afford a security system, they say keeping a security company decal in your window or yard can still help.
Also make sure that you’re dialed in to a crime watch network in your neighborhood.
Finally, they suggest keeping your car keys close to the bed. Security experts say that if you hear someone creeping around and trying to break into your home you can push the panic button on the key fob to try and scare them away and make noise.
Some tips to keep your homes safe this holiday:
- Keep your valuables in places that can’t be seen from the outside
- Use motion sensors on outside lights to make it more difficult for burglars to get into your home without being noticed
- Keep shrubs and plants trimmed away from entrances to give burglars less places to hide
- Get a security system with a visible sign – burglars are less likely to break into a home that has one.
