MUNCIE -- When BorgWarner closed its large Muncie plant in 2009, close to 800 jobs were lost and the city's economy took a direct hit.
Ten years later, there are plans to redevelop the property.
Wednesday, Indianapolis-based Heritage Environmental and Zinc Nacional from Mexico announced a joint venture called "Waelz Sustainable Products LLC"
The plant will produce zinc oxide -- an ingredient in numerous products such as metallic zinc, rubber, ceramics, lubricants and ointments.
The company plans to be operational in Muncie during the first half of next year and will hire up to 60 workers for the initial phase.
Additional expansions could bring employment to just over 200.
