CARMEL — The fall semester will bring change to school schedules in Carmel.

The Carmel-Clay School Board has approved modifications to the start and end times for all grades. Here's a look:

  • Elementary schools: The district's 11 elementary schools will begin their day 15-minutes earlier, at 7:45 a.m. The extra 15-minutes has been added to increase recess time from 15 to 30-minutes. Closing time remains 2:35 p.m.
  • Middle schools: Carmel's three middle schools will see their day shortened by 20-minutes and there will be later start and end times. Middle schools will run from 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The new start time is a full hour later than than the previous start.
  • High school: The high school also goes to a later start and a 15-minute shorter day. High schools hours will be the same as middle schools, 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. High school previous started at 7:50 a.m.

The later start times for the high school and middle schools were driven by research showing students may do better when they come to school later in the morning.

Additionally, all schools will start 40-minutes later twice a month, with dates to be determined. The later start will allow for teacher and staff professional development.
