BROWNSBURG, Ind.— The Brownsburg Community School Corporation is using multiple security measures to keep students safe in school.
The district, located in Hendricks County, is responsible for the safety and education of 9,000 students. To keep them protected, Brownsburg is utilizing school resource officers, metal detectors, and other security measures.
The district has four school resource officers and one K-9 officer for its 12 buildings and 2 mile campus, and some of its staff and school resource officers are armed.
Brownsburg has also requested and received 36 handheld metal detectors from the Governor’s office.

The district declined to provide someone to talk to RTV6 about school safety on camera, but held a public forum on July 24 during which they shared safety statistics and other security information.
According to a presentation shared during the forum, more than 8,733 parents, volunteers and visitors have passed a criminal history background check. Teachers and staff are required to undergo a more extensive background check upon hire, which is renewed every five years.

In addition, 412 people were denied entry into school buildings, and school police have placed 17 people on a trespass warning over the last three years for a variety of reasons including court orders and violations of criminal law.
The presentation also stated that the district has a campus safety team in place, security cameras, door security and has increased mental health support.

RTV6 spoke with Brownsburg parents who did not want to go on camera but told us they believe Brownsburg is staying on top of all aspects of school security.
The district emphasizes there’s no correlation between the number of social media posts and credibility of the threat.

“School safety is everyone’s responsibility,” read a statement in Brownsburg’s school safety presentation. “The collaboration of the community, schools, families, public safety, and students is essential. While everything isn’t preventable, we are all committed to working together to keep our school community safe.”
