INDIANAPOLIS – On the city’s west side, the Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township has more than 16,000 students in 17 different schools.
The district tells RTV6 that they have a school safety plan for each school in the district, although they won't release many details about that plan, because of security concerns.
A district spokesperson was able to share some of the basics of their school safety plans via email.
“We developed our plan collaboratively, with multiple stakeholders, and continue to do so,” the district said.
The individual school safety plans are overseen by the District's Coordinator of Safety & Security and the Coordinator of Safe & Drug-Free Schools, according to district policies. "These coordinators shall evaluate and recommend changes to District policies, practices, and facilities that would improve safety."
Documents provided to RTV6 show the district trains all staff in identifying signs of violent or dangerous behaviors and practices drills for multiple scenarios throughout the school year.
The district also has perimeter security and takes special precautions when it comes to visitors in the buildings.
"Staff members, high school students, and visitors are required to wear identification badges at all times,” the district policy states. The district uses special software for visitor tracking and identification to make sure they have been authorized to be in the building.
MSD of Wayne Township also has seven school resource officers and the district also utilizes metal detectors that were provided by the state.
We reached out to parents at the district to give us their thoughts on school security. While no one wanted to go on camera, the people we talked to said they are satisfied with the district’s school safety and security.
