AVON — IU Health West Hospital in Avon is expanding, but not in the usual way.

Rather than building additions out from the existing structures, IU West is moving up.

To mark the beginning of the project, a christening ceremony was held Friday, with three champagne bottles suspended from a crane.

The hospital is spending $84 million to add 48 inpatient beds, an operating room and expanded labs.

One floor will be added to the hospital’s “B” inpatient tower, and two floors will be added to “A” tower.

Hospital spokesman Berkley Rios said the current complex isn’t large enough.

“We serve a growing community and have been proud to serve the people of Hendricks County and beyond since we opened in 2004,” he said.

The work will be completed by early 2021 and the hospital will continue normal operations during the construction.

IU West opened 14 years ago and is part of the suburban-Indianapolis hospital building boom.

Many housing additions have been built in the area in recent years and more are on the way.
