INDIANAPOLIS — An internship for high school students through one of the nation's largest banks is now accepting applications.
The Student Leaders internship through Bank of America helps to get high school juniors and seniors classroom-to-career ready by building their leadership skills and teaching them about the nonprofit side of business.
Students in the program this past summer went to Newfields and had the chance to clean up the grounds and see the inner workings of how a nonprofit is run and how their needs are unique, all while making a difference in the community.
One of the projects this summer's interns had to do was try to figure out how to help Newfields better engage with a younger audience. Feven Tekeste took part in the internship, and she said it gave her insight into new things.
"I never realized how a not-for-profit works and it takes a lot to keep this engine running," Tekeste said. "It's kind of cool to see behind the scenes and seeing everything that Newfields has to offer."
Another thing students learn is how to improve their money habits by building a budget and creating a savings plan. At the end of the internship, students traveled to Washington D.C. for a summit with all the Bank of America interns.
