INDIANAPOLIS — Nike, Chanel, Air Jordan have recognizable company logos. Students at the J. Everett Light Career Center are working on their creativity to create iconic logos like these in their digital design and advertising program.

Students in the program work on a broad range of projects from designing graphics for logos, t-shirts, advertising and promotional items. As they build their portfolio, they will also take part in design competitions.

"I like designing," Takianna Payne, a digital designs and advertising student, said. "I like it so much that I came to the class a second year as well."

In addition to learning advertising techniques, the students work with real clients.

"I like drawing, it seems like a better alternative to a regular art class and you can make a career out of digital design," Madyson Horton, a student, said.

Being innovative is critical for the industry, their instructor said.

"Most of my students think that they have to draw well to be a graphic designer and that's a great misconception," Kristine Kelly, digital designs and advertising instructor, said. "It's that creative mind and being able to come up with a concept that the client needs."

Students can save more than $800 in college tuition through the program.

Payne said she plans to take the skills she's learned to help further her dreams in graphic design.

"This will like help me make money because I'll be able to sell my designs and definitely help with college to pay for it."
