GREENWOOD — Sherlock Holmes step aside because students are coming in to solve the crime.

At Central Nine Career Center in Greenwood, students are studying biomedical science and that involves studying forensics.

Walking around the crime scene, students are trying to figure out how a woman died using a bit of critical thinking and problem solving.

"I think it's wonderful," Robin King, biomedical science instructor, said. "I think of myself as a facilitator so I give them the problem and they try to solve it in the end."

Jasmine Bickel wants to be a first responder. As they learn about forensics, autopsies, drug analysis and the human body's systems, Bickel said she will benefit from the program in the future.

"So it's kind of like stuff you'll see at a scene that you'll need to know when you get to the scene as an EMT," Bickel said.

The students study blood spatter and get a closer look under the microscope. Devin Cooper believes the experiences through the program will help him pursue a career in microbiology.

"Just getting experience in the lab, the equipment and learning safety procedures and stuff like that," Cooper said.

Through the program, students earn college credit and certifications in CPR and first aid. As the students get a better understanding about biomedical sciences, they're having fun solving this case along the way.

"I think it's really cool," Cooper said. "I mean I really enjoy it."

Bickel agreed.

"It's really crazy, but it's pretty exciting," she said.
