INDIANAPOLIS — Ivanka Trump visited the Indiana Women's Prison on Thursday in her capacity as an adviser to the president.
While at the prison, Trump got a close look at the 'Last Mile' program the prison offers to help Hoosiers get jobs after their release.
"We believe that there are an amazing number of men and women in our country who are serving their time, who deserve a second chance, and they deserve to be successful when they come home — if they do the work," a manager of the program said.
The program managers explained to Trump what their final website would be used for, the struggles they've had along the way, and just how much they appreciate the program.
"We all learned how to work on a team, how to collaborate ideas, and problem solve and become mentors to others," an inmate said. "I learned how to put my best foot forward and be the best me I can be."
The creators of the program say just getting in is an accomplishment for the women.
Inmates must have good behavior for at least 18 months, write an essay, take a test, and interview to get in. The inmates also must be at least three years from getting out.
