INDIANAPOLIS — One of central Indiana's largest medical providers needs people who can be on the front line for anyone who stops in to its clinics or hospitals to see a doctor.
Peter Samboy's face is on of the first ones you'll see if you have a doctor's appointment at the IU Health clinic on South East Street on Indianapolis's south side. He has been a registration specialist for IU Health for 12 years. When he started with the company, he knew nothing about health care.
"I was clueless," Samboy says, " I didn't know anything about it."
Now, he is a pro.
"Checking them in. Checking them out," Samboy said. "Insurance information. We try to guide them as best as we can."
Samboy said the key to the job is being a people person.
"Be yourself," he said. "You want to treat people as you would want to be treated."

IU Health has roughly 1,030 registration specialists around the state. The company needs about 60 more to work at clinics and hospitals across central Indiana.
Registration specialists check in patients arriving for checkups, verify insurance information, collect payment, and man the phones. They do it with a pleasant demeanor.
"We want people who are friendly, warm, caring, good customer skills," Mandy Bates, vice president of human resources, said. "We require a high school diploma. For everything else, we can skill you up."
IU Health wants applicants willing to learn about medical coding and insurance. More importantly, they should be good at making connections with the patients.

The pay range falls between $13 and $19 per hour. The medical company provides benefits and tuition reimbursement for those looking to advance into other fields of positions under the IU Health umbrella.
Samboy said he loves his jobs and it allows him to provide for his family. And since he's part of a team, whose aim is to be warm and welcoming, when he's here, he's family.
"When I leave my home, I leave my family and I come to my second family," Samboy said.
