INDIANAPOLIS -- As a record number of Hoosiers file for unemployment, you might think there a few jobs to be had.
But, while many businesses are struggling, others are doing just fine.
Such is the case with Market Wagon, an Indianapolis company that delivers fresh food to your door. Sort of a farmers market on wheels.
Nick Carter is co-founder and CEO of Market Wagon. "So we help local artisans and farmers list their products online, be able to get them available to order for local consumers and then we deliver that to the consumer's doorstep."
As some supermarket shelves are bare and people limit their trips from home, the online service with a strong local supply chain is ready to meet the need.
"Over the last three weeks, our company has grown by over 400 percent, we've hired more than 100 new temporary workers." said Carter. And they are still hiring, "The vast majority of the people we have been hiring have been in the service industry, but they are excellent, you know they take really good care of our customers," he said.
Troy Hanna is one of the new hires. "I get to put headphones in and listen to music and that helps me get my day going a little faster which is fun and kind of takes your mind off of things for sure," he said. "Then typically what my day looks like is I walk in here we put the bags on the shelf first then we put the, we call them order tags - we put the order tags on the bags. That's typically a Monday or a Wednesday. And then Thursday is the chaos, which is fun. That's when the farmers show up."
Hanna is with Market Basket after losing his job with an A-V company. "Yeah, I was unfortunately laid off, it makes your head spin," he said. " I've never personally been laid off from a job or even let go from a job before so its a very very new experience for me, and it was one of those, it took a while to sink in, that's for sure"
Hanna says he has met so many new people, and the environment at Market Basket is positive. His best advise to others in is shoes right now is to reach out to your network of friends and stay busy.
Market Wagon is not only providing temporary work for people laid off during the pandemic, but the service also helps Indiana farmers and artisans be able to distribute their supply.
