GREENWOOD — Thousands of Hoosiers are sitting on the sidelines unable to access thousands of dollars in state training grants because they don’t have a high school diploma.
Central Nine Career Center, 1999 U.S. 31 in Greenwood in Johnson County, is set up to help adults get their high school equivalency certificate.
Approximately 476,000 Hoosier adults don't have a high school diploma — a requirement for a majority of jobs and a must to tap into the millions of dollars available in training grants connected to the jobs that need the most people including advanced manufacturing, IT, construction, healthcare, and logistics.
"We come up with a plan for short term and long term goals," Nicole Corn, a coach at Central Nine, said.
Corn meets with adults in search of a high school diploma and provides a free career assessment test to determine an individual’s strengths and then sits down to discuss what you want to do in the future.
"We definitely want them to get a job, make a good wage and learn something new and be happy," she said.
The high school equivalency program at Central Nine is also free, and depending on the person can take one week to six months to complete.
After achieving that, dozens of training programs are available at Central Nine or you can go elsewhere to pursue your personal dreams.
Michelle Davis, director of adult education at Central Nine said she is aware how difficult it is for an adult without a diploma to walk in the door.
"We're all in this together," Davis said. "So we can't leave a population out because they didn't do it the first time. Everyone deserves a second chance."
