CARMEL — A Northern Indiana company is expanding into Carmel, and it's hiring.
BraunAbility already employs about 900 workers at its manufacturing operation in Pulaski County, and it plans to stay there.
But, it will locate its global headquarters and research and development facility in Hamilton County.
BraunAbility makes wheelchair vehicles and wheelchair lifts in Winamac, Indiana and other locations.
Company executives, along with state and local officials made the expansion announcement Wednesday in Carmel.
"Indiana has the highest concentration of manufacturing jobs in the nation, and we are thrilled to see companies like BraunAbility planning for their long-term presence throughout the state," said Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch.
The global headquarters is expected to open in June in an existing building at 645 West Carmel Drive.
A new building to house research and development should be ready next year.
In Carmel, the company expects to create 68 new positions in accounting, engineering, finance, human resources and marketing.
"Winamac, Indiana is the birthplace of our company and will remain the heart and soul of the company as its primary manufacturing center," said Staci Kroon, president and CEO of BraunAbility. "The new facilities will be designed for collaboration and innovation and are key to our long-term recruitment and retention strategies."
BraunAbility has been operating in Indiana since 1963 and is the largest employer in Pulaski County.
Besides Indiana, its products are manufactured in the United Kingdom, Sweden and Brazil.
