INDIANAPOLIS — There's a great need right now for letter carriers as the holiday season creates a need for the delivery of more mail and packages.
Anitra Robinson begins her day sorting mail before hitting the road. Her route includes rural areas in Zionsville.
"A personality goes a long way — communication, speaking, and just compassionate," Robinson said.
Robinson joined the postal service in June with the intentions of making this her career.
"We touch someone's mail every single day," Robinson said. "For some people we're the only people they see, the only people they talk to."
Being involved paid off a couple of weeks ago when Robinson spotted a house fire on her route, and jumped into action to make sure the homeowner was okay.
"When you see something you have to respond to it," Robinson said. "It may not be in my job description (but), I would do it again."
The postal service is in the middle of a hiring spree as the holiday season requires more people to meet the delivery demands.
A seasonal temporary job could lead to a long term position depending on your performance.
"The people that we have and come here, excel," Paul Chaffee, Zionsville Postmaster, said. "Categorically show up when they're suppose to learn to do trade very well."
Anitra has found her purpose delivering packages today — while dreams of being a postmaster tomorrow.
The postal service has seasonal jobs the range in pay from $16 to $17 per hour.
The agency is also looking for rural letter carriers, assistant rural carriers and city carrier assistants.
Rural carriers positions can make $18 to $19 an hour, and the city position is $17 - $29 an hour.
