SHELBYVILLE—More than 400 new jobs are in Shelbyville's future.
A company that makes plant-based burgers, sausages and other vegetarian meat alternatives plans to build a plant there and eventually employ 460 people.
Elmhurst, Illinois-based Greenleaf Foods made the announcement Monday.
The facility is planned for a 57-acre site in Shelbyville and should open late next year and be fully operational in 2021.
Shelbyville is about 35-miles southeast of Indianapolis, on I 74.
In a press release, Greenleaf said the 230,000-square-foot plant will more than double the company's production capacity "to meet the surging consumer demand for its portfolio of brands."
"Out new facility will be the center of plant-based protein excellence that helps accelerate our company's growth," said Greenleaf President Dan Curtin. "Our world-class research and development teams are shattering what were once thought to be the culinary boundaries of plant-based protein developments, and our new facility will take those developments to commercialization."
"I am thrilled that Shelby County was chosen for this project," said Shelbyville Mayor Tom DeBaun. "It's further validation that the administrations of the City of Shelbyville and Shelby County are working collaboratively to make this a great place to do business.
The plant is expected to cost about $310 million dollars to build.
Greenleaf already has facilities in Seattle and Massachusetts.
